Teaching English in Korea’s Daejeon camps
Camps for teaching English in Korea are taking root in Daejeon, where an English camp is now being operated for kids entering 6th grade of elementary school and up to 2nd grade of middle school.
As many as 480 kids from 211 elementary and middle schools in the area will participate in this particular camp to improve communication skills in English and to enhance their understanding of global cultures through English-speaking culture experiences.
This Daejeon English camp will be operating a total of 20 sessions (12 geared to elementary school, 8 for middle school) from this month to January 2023, and each session will operate for a period of 4 days at a time, with kids commuting to the camp each day.
In the past, this camp has been a very popular English education program where students’ satisfaction with the program has been surveyed and exceeded 95% every year. This year, in particular, the introduction of a new program called ‘Escape Room’ is expected to further increase student satisfaction.
The main programs of Daejeon’s English Camp include Drama, Introduction to English-speaking Culture, Science Discovery, Animal Kingdom, My Bakery, Mini Olympics, Finding the Criminal (CSI), and Infinite Challenge, quiz solving (High Q), etc. Through these student-centered tasks and experiential learning, self-directed learning takes place and it is possible for kids to naturally absorb English-speaking culture.
During the Daejeon English camp, students ride on a free school bus provided by the Daejeon Office of Education to Daejeon Education and Training Institute, with all expenses paid for including textbooks, meals and snacks.
In addition, 3 native-speaking English assistant teachers and 4 Korean English teachers will participate in the English immersion education and conduct English throughout the entire process as a cooperative class.
