THE DETAILS
Overview
Teaching English in Vietnam is a great way for you to explore while investing in your international work experience and impacting students through the gift of a new language. The country offers a diverse range of experiences, with opportunities to rock climb, drop into one of the world’s largest caves, explore the coffee-making region surrounded by mighty waterfalls or light a lantern in Hoi An and watch it drift into the river during the lantern festival. If you want to eat your way through Vietnam, pho is a must! This linguistically diverse country is home to approximately 97 million people, with breadth in religion and customs. While in Vietnam, take the time to understand the political history from a perspective different than your own. There is no better way to explore a country than to dig deep into a local community and plug into a career.
Eligibility
There are three components to a teacher’s eligibility: citizenship, education, and personality.
Citizenship
In order to obtain a visa to teach in Vietnam, you need to be from one of the following countries and hold a valid citizenship: America, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, if you are from outside of one of these countries Vietnam immigration will not grant the appropriate visa for teaching abroad.
Education
To qualify for a visa and get hired by a school, you are required to have a Bachelor’s degree from an English-speaking academy. Many of our teachers will also have Master’s degrees, which is a great bonus. You will also require a 120-hour TEFL teaching certificate. Don’t let the need for TEFL stop you from joining this program;we have many great partners through which you can acquire your qualification.
Personality
Adjusting to a new culture and work environment can be very demanding, and we have found that teachers who are flexible and driven in nature excel in this type of teaching environment.
Job Details
Depending on the teaching role, age levels vary from kindergarten through to high school. You will be provided with a curriculum that guides you through the school year, with the ability to add your own flare.
Contracts in Vietnam offer great work life balance as some contracts have as few as 20 hours a week of teaching. Because the details of each job varies, the specifics of the roles will be addressed during the application and interview process with Adventure Teaching.

Country Profile
Vietnam has a fascinating past, marked by independence following World War II. Many would only remember the Vietnam War, however the history is much more complex. Considerable effort has been attributed to increasing the economy of Vietnam, and now Vietnam’s population participates on the world stage with exports such as rice and coffee. Vietnam is ethnically, religiously and linguistically diverse offering a profound experience. Although geographically small (about the size of New Mexico), Vietnam is diverse in climate from a tropical south, a rainy north and wet and dry seasons. Vietnam offer a great environment to explore, culturally rich experiences and great schools to teach in.
Placements
Adventure Teaching has been placing teachers in Asia for 12+ years. We pride ourselves in working with schools that treat teachers with respect and value education. We believe that placements are only successful if both the teacher and the school are happy, therefore we are committed to getting to know our teachers so that we can place them in a school that fits. Teachers are asked to provide the AT team with their country and location preferences, we take these into consideration for a placement but ultimately will provide you with the best option.

“I’ve made this my home for at least the next 3 years while I save up for future life plans. Living in SEA I can travel to amazing locations at affordable costs, I get to learn the Vietnamese and greater SEA countries cultures and traditions which keeps me filled with a hunger for learning and growing myself. Vietnam was going to be a 1 year work away, but since arriving here I have grown within the company I work for and acquired a position that you’d only get in the west at maybe the age of 35, I now hold this position at 26 and the experience I am gaining is priceless. Honestly the best decision I have ever made was to come here!”
“I’ve been living in Hanoi, Vietnam for just over a year. If you’re looking for bustling cities, mountainous landscapes and long winding beaches, Vietnam is the place to go. It’s incredibly affordable and travelling is a breeze. Scoot around on your bike from the local market and around the massive lake to hole-in-the-wall coffee shops and as the sun is setting, experience the infamous Hanoi traffic on your way to work. I work in a language center that operates in the evenings, so you have the entire day to wander around the city or meet up with the hundreds of expats that reside here. The kids love to speak English, they’re eager to learn and will always try their best to impress you. The lifestyle here is an absolute dream, if you’re on the fence about moving abroad, just go for it!”
